Elle was created in 1945 by Pierre Lazareff and his wife Hélène Gordon in France.
Elle was launched in many other countries between 1987 and 1996. In 1987, Elle was first published in Italy and Hong Kong. The following year, it began being published in Germany, China, Brazil, Sweden, Greece and Portugal. Russia was the last country to get the magazine; it came to Russia in 1996.
Elle is said to be the world's largest fashion magazine.
