Etajima was the site of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy (海軍兵学校 Kaigun Heigakkō , Short form: 海兵 Kaihei) from 1888 to 1945.
Today's city was created in 2004 by the merger of the towns of Etajima, Nōmi, Ōgaki, and Okimi.[source?]
