Extra (acting)

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An extra is a performer in a movie, television series, theatre play, musical, opera or ballet production, who always appears in a nonspeaking or nonsinging (silent) capacity, usually in the background (for example, in a set, audience or busy street scene). They generally do not or very rarely interact physically with the actors. Unlike actors with bit parts, many extras are not actors, are usually not paid money by the producers and they are almost never listed in the credits. Their scenes are also often removed during the post-production of movies and television series, meaning that they do not appear in the final production.

War movies and epic movies often employ or employed extras in large numbers. Some movies have featured hundreds or even thousands of extras, especially before the advancement of special effects and the invention of computer animation (CGI) used for special effects, which has reduced the need for extras and movie sets.
