Fernand Devestel (10 July 1930 – 28 December 2022) monastic name Waldebert was the Superior General of the Congregation of the Brothers of Charity between 1976 and 2000.[1][2]

Biography[change | change source]

Waldebert joined the Brothers of Charity in 1948. In 1967 he became vicar general and was specially charged with the renewal of the statutes of the congregation. In 1976 he was elected Superior General and led the Brothers of Charity worldwide. He held this position until 2000. René Stockman succeeded him. Waldebert became afterwards provincial superior for Belgium and the Netherlands and director of the training house for young brothers.[1][3]

Devestel died at residential care center Sint-Jan in Zelzate on 28 December 2022, at the age of 92.[1][2]
