Summary

Description

Southeastern only serve London Blackfriars Monday to Friday during the morning and evening peaks plus the occasional weekend for engineering work diversions. And seen here again is one off it's normal route. During the last week of August 2017, Charing Cross was closed for 8 days to carry out further work in connection with the Thameslink Programme. Southeastern Metro plus Tunbridge Wells stopper services ran to a modified timetable and were diverted into Cannon Street. Mainline services to and from Hastings were diverted into Victoria whilst the remaining Mainline services from Dover and Ramsgate via Ashford and Tonbridge normally booked into Charing Cross were diverted for four days (Tuesday 29 August to Friday 1 September) into London Waterloo via the Linford Street curve. This was achieved by fitting the Thameslink Programme work after a 3-week partial closure of Waterloo which brought the former Eurostar platforms 20 to 24 back into full time use. As these were not needed once platform 1 to 10 were back in use until early September, two (21 and 22) were assigned for Southeastern to use.

However the Waterloo diversions did not go quite to plan. Part way into the 3-week block at Waterloo a derailment plus the overrunning meant Southeastern being diverted on Tuesday 29 August into Blackfriars. On Friday 1 September, my plans to travel out from Waterloo that morning were abruptly changed when track circuit problems again reduced capacity at Waterloo. With South Western Railway getting priority, for around three hours that morning Southeastern services were again diverted into Blackfrairs.

Here we see units 375806 with 375628 behind on the diverted 2Z36, 10:30 London Blackfriars (originally 10:27 London Waterloo) to Dover Priory via Tonbridge and Ashford.
