The only difficulty inthe way was a Federal battery with its infantrysupports, which could ertfilade them in theiradvance. Two regiments of Elzeys brigade,which had gotseparated in crossing the swamp,were sent by me, by way of my left flank, tothe rear of the battery to attack the in-fantry supports, while Colonel Iverson, ofthe Twentieth North Carolina, charged itin front. The battery was captured and heldlong enough for the two brigades to advanceacross the open plain. The effect of ourappearance, says Garlands official report, at this opportune juncture (upon the enemysflank), cheering and charging, decided thefate of the day.
