English: The old Royal Mail Hotel at Avenel, Victoria, built in 1847. Ned Kelly, later famous as a bushranger, saved the owners son from drowning in the creek near the hotel
Hotel was built by James Hilet (1817-1887). Royal Mail Hotel in Avenel has a 'Statement of Significance'. Victorian Heritage. VHRH0335. First owners were James Hilet & family. First operated as a store, till he obtained a publicans licence in 1857. He was publican till 1860 when Frederick Ruffy took over.The licence was then transferred to Esau Shelton 1862-63.Ned Kelly aged 11 yrs old saved their son Richard Shelton from drowning.
