Nógrád megye címere álló, csücskös talpú tárcsapajzs. Kék mezejében zöld pajzstalpon, jobbra néző, álló, ezüstpáncélos, sisakos magyar vitéz látható, amelynek a sisak-forgóján lévő két toll közül a felső zöld, az alsó vörös. A vitéz jobb kezében felfelé néző, ezüstszínű kardot tart, baljával Magyarország tojásdad alakú címeres pajzsára támaszkodik. A vitéz arca és keze testszínű.
A főpajzsot háromlevelű heraldikai aranykorona díszíti. Az ezen lévő ékkövek közül a két legnagyobb ellipszis alakú zöld, a többi vörös, a korona tetején és a leveleken lévő gyöngyszemek fehérek. A pajzstakaró arany, a pajzs mögötti címer-köpeny vörös.
Nógrád megye címerében nem véletlenül áll fegyveres vitéz. Területét ősidők óta harcias kő-, bronz- és vaskori népek, majd kelták, germánok, avarok lakták. Első földvárát szlávok emelték. A honfoglalók - Anonymus szerint - Szovárd, Kadocsa és Huba vezérletével Pásztótól kiindulva kardcsapás nélkül hódoltatták területét, s hogy meg is ültek ott, azt régészeti emlékek és törzsnévi eredetű helynevei bizonyítják.
Vármegyéjét Szent István alapította, első várispánja 1216-ból ismert. Kővára a tatárjárás után épült. A terjeszkedő vármegye, amely a váci püspök egyházmegyéjéhez tartozott, elérte az esztergomi érsekség területét is, így két főesperessége alakult ki. A nemesi vármegye már a 13. század végére megszerveződött. Honvédő harcainkban és háborúinkban kiválóan helytálló nemzetségek (Pok, Kachich, Zách, Szemere) és családok (Balassa, Salgói, Széchenyi) és vitéz férfiak (Giskra, Szapolyai István stb.) birtokoltak is. A török időkben többször gazdát cserélő neves véghely s nemzeti szabadságküzdelmeink, nemesi ellenállásunk színtere. Bár 1919-ben a cseh intervenciós sereget itt verték szét, Trianonban mégis nagyobb részét Csehszlovákiához csatolták.
A vármegye első címerén az 1551-ből fennmaradt pecsétkép tanúsága szerint már a fent említett páncélos vitéz szerepelt kerek talpú pajzsban. A 16. század végétől 1663-ig összevonták Heves és Pest vármegyékkel. Az 1655-ben III. Ferdinándtól nyert, bővített pecséten a páncélos vitéz már az országcímert mintázó tojásdad pajzsra támaszkodik. Mázai változtak, kezdetben a vitéz ezüstmező zöld udvarán állt, később (1836-ban) a mezőt kékre változtatták. A Rákosi érában betiltott megyei címert a területi önkormányzat 1991-ben állította vissza.
