Object history
Deutsch: Das Wappen knüpft an die Entstehung des Ortes und die frühe Geschichte an. Der Löwe mit dem Greifenkopf gilt als ältestes Wappenbild der Welfen, die im oberen Lechgebiet reich begütert waren und als bayerische Herzöge und Stifter des Prämonstratenserklosters Steingaden (1147) einen engen Bezug zum Gemeindegebiet hatten. Der Greifenlöwe wurde als apokryphes Stifterwappen 1441 auch in das Abteiwappen aufgenommen. Der auf Quadersteinen stehende Turm (Gaden aus Stein) ergibt ein für den Gemeindenamen redendes Bild; ein solches Steinbauwerk, vielleicht ein römischer Wachturm, hat vermutlich einst wirklich existiert und dem Ort den Namen gegeben. Auch der Turm ist seit dem 16. Jahrhundert Bestandteil des Klosterwappens von Steingaden. Die Gemeinde Steingaden erhielt das Wappen in zeitlicher Nähe zu ihrer Neubildung aus den Gemeinden Urspring, Fronreiten und Lauterbach am 1. April 1939.
