Object history
Deutsch: Wörth wurde zwischen 1292 und 1298 von König Adolf von Nassau zur Stadt erhoben. Seit 1438 gehörte die Stadt zum Erzstift Mainz, das seit 1298 hier belegt ist. Das Erzstift verpfändete die Stadt an die Freiherren von Hoheneck und an die Grafen von Kronberg, von denen sie erst 1720 ausgelöst wurde. Aus dem 15. Jahrhundert ist der Abdruck eines Siegels überliefert, das wohl nach 1438 entstanden ist. Es zeigt das Brustbild des Mainzer Erzbischofs als Landesherr mit Pedum und Baldachin über einem Schild mit dem Mainzer Rad. Im zweiten Siegel steht wiederum das Brustbild des Erzbischofs als Hinweis auf die Landesherrschaft, anstelle des Mainzer Rades das Wappen der Grafen von Schönborn. Der Stempel ist wohl unter der Herrschaft des Mainzer Fürstbischofs Lothar Franz von Schönborn (1695 bis 1729) um 1720 entstanden. Ein neues Wappen erscheint erstmals in der Bürgermeistermedaille von 1819; es steht seitdem in allen Dienstsiegeln und im Schrifttum. Zusammen mit dem roten Kreuz handelt es sich hierbei um das Wappen der Grafen von Kronberg. Der Mainzer Fürstbischof Johann Schweikard von Kronberg (1604 bis 1626) belehnte dieses Adelsgeschlecht 1624 mit der Herrschaft Wörth. Bei Hupp sind die Felder 1 und 4 silbern.
