À son apogée, Ormuz était l'un des ports les plus importants au Moyen-Orient, contrôlant les voies commerciales entre l'Inde et l'Afrique de l'Est. Avant de passer sous contrôle portugais au début du XVIIe siècle, Ormuz était une ville-État qui s'est peu à peu transformée en royaume indépendant. Sa situation unique le long des routes de commerce en a fait l'une des villes les plus riches au monde. Les Portugais ont contrôlé la ville et son port de 1515 à 1622, date à laquelle ils ont été chassés de la région par les Perses.

English: This drawing shows the Portuguese fort at Ormuz, located on the Persian Gulf island of Hormuz. In its heyday, Ormuz was one of the most important ports in the Middle East, controlling trading routes between India and East Africa. Before coming under Portuguese control in the early 1500s, Ormuz was a city-state that flourished as an independent kingdom. Its prime location along trade routes made it one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The Portuguese controlled the city and its port from 1515 until 1622, when they were expelled from the region by the Persians.
