"En la Vista de la ciudad de Caracas, del inglés Joseph Thomas - pintor que, según las investigaciones de Alfredo Boulton, entró y salió del país con bastante frecuencia entre los años 1837 y 1844 - podemos observar con relativa precisión, además de la grandiosidad del paisaje natural y sus inmensas proporciones, el emplazamiento general de la ciudad, las diferencias volumétricas y escala de las edificaciones. Su imagen de Caracas, la única obra artística que ha sido identificada con su nombre, es una de las más descriptivas de la extensión y la forma de la ciudad porque, aunque la mirada del autor se centra, como en las imágenes anteriores, en la grandiosidad natural, en ella también se observan detalles arquitectónicos y un registro de las residencias capitalinas más importantes; esto sigue un modelo tradicional europeo de las visiones topográficas donde, a modo de leyenda, se enumeraban las edificaciones o monumentos. La apariencia general sigue siendo ordenada, limpia y con una atmósfera serena, no del todo acorde con nuestro ambiente tropical. Es una diferencia que bien señala Palenzuela: "El grabado de Thomas está lleno de detalles: muros, casas, patios, iglesias, calles, palmeras, ruinas, la extraordinaria montaña y, por si fuera poco, algunos modales en el vestir citadino. Su atmósfera es propia de un clima frío. Las construcciones parecen sólidas. La vida se muestra apacible""
