Summary

Description
English: There is increasing concern by health professionals in the UK and elsewhere, about our "obesity crisis". Many of them say this should be high on the list of priorities for improving public health.

Which led Haringey Council to commit £300,000 of increasingly scarce public funds (part-grant; part 'soft'-loan) to subsidise a supposedly healthier fried chicken restaurant for children and young people.    This in turn led me and others to question whether this huge investment in one small private company was the most effective way to spend increasingly limited public money.    It also added to my observations of snacks and fast foods offered in public spaces. There seems to be an easily available and often inexpensive supply of foodstuffs high in sugar and fat content.    Or, as Dr Asseem Malhotra, co-author of an Academy of Medical Royal Colleges' report said in a news report on the Independent Television Network News (ITN) :   "We have an over-supply of cheap sugary or energy-dense   foods and that limits our ability to make healthy choices.   And that's why we have a problem which is affecting the   majority of the population".
