Français : Sawtche, nommée Sarah Saartjie Baartman en Europe (ca. 1790 - 1815), dite la Vénus Hottentote, capturée en Afrique du Sud, exhibée comme phénomène de foire puis contrainte à la prostitution, étudiée comme spécimen de "Femme de race Bôchismann" en 1815 par Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire et Georges Cuvier, lequel en déduisit des théories sur l'infériorité de certaines races humaines. Ces images (réunies ici pour la présentation) sont deux planches extraites du tome II des « illustrations de l'Histoire Naturelle des Mammifères ». On les trouve entre les représentations d'un mouflon de Corse (femelle) et d'un entelle (mâle). Cette illustration est issue d'une peinture de la jeune femme exposée nue dans le Jardin botanique devant des peintres qui dessinent son portrait.
English: Sawtche, named Sarah "Saartjie" Baartman in Europe (ca.1790 - 1815), called the Hottentot Venus, captured in South Africa, exhibited in Europe as a freak show attraction, forced into prostitution, studied as a specimen of "Woman of race Bôchismann" in 1815 by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and Georges Cuvier, which deduced theories on the inferiority of some human races. These images are taken from Volume II of the "Illustrations of the Natural History of Mammals." They are found between the representations of a Corsican mouflon (female), and a langur (male)...
