Description

Up Capitals Limited express on the ECML at Wymondley, south of Hitchin

View northward, towards Hitchin, Grantham, Doncaster and the North; ex-Great Northern ECML. The 'Capitals Limited' replaced from 1949 the non-stop run formerly made by the 'Flying Scotsman', leaving London and Edinburgh ahead of it. Here the fireman of Gresley A4 streamliner No. 60009 'Union of South Africa' is piling on the coal as the engine attacks the rising grades through Hitchin up to Stevenage - a fine sight.
