Object history Der Fünfberg im Schildfuß redet für den Gemeindenamen Birgland (�Bergland�, Mittelgebirgslandschaft des Oberpfälzer Jura), der 1972 anlässlich der Gebietsreform für die aus den fünf Gemeinden Eckeltshof, Frechetsfeld, Fürnried, Poppberg und Schwend neu gebildete Gemeinde kreiert wurde. 1978 kam noch die Gemeinde Sunzendorf hinzu. Die zwei Lilien erinnern an die alte Herrschaft der Grafen von Sulzbach, auf die auch die Burgen im Gemeindegebiet, Lichtenegg und Poppberg, zurückgehen. Die Zinnenmauer ist dem Familienwappen der Grafen von Preysing entliehen, die von 1580 bis 1759 als Hofmarksherren auf der Burg Lichtenegg saßen.
