The border of the Nagorno-Karabakh region after the First Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian forces of Nagorno-Karabakh controlled the areas colored in light yellow which was 17% of Azerbaijan's territory. The borders changed very little between 1994 and 2020, until the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war started.

The First Nagorno-Karabakh War was a war that happened between February 1988 to May 1994, in the small ethnic enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in southwestern Azerbaijan, between the mostly ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh backed by the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan.
