Gex (French: [ʒɛks]) is a commune in the Ain department. It is found in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the east of France and is the capital of the arrondissement of Gex and of the historical region Pays de Gex.

It lies 5 km (3.1 mi) from the Swiss border and 16 km (9.9 mi) from Geneva.

The commune of Gex has an area of 32.02 km2 (12.36 sq mi) and its average altitude is 1,073 m (3,520 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 610 m (2,000 ft).[1]

The inhabitants of Gex are known, in French, as Gexois (women: Gexoises').[2]
