Gillian Ayres (3 February 1930 – 11 April 2018) was a British artist. She painted abstract pictures. She used bright colors.[1]

She was born in London. She studied at Camberwell School of Art. She started there when she was 16.[2][3][4]

She taught art to children during World War II. Later she taught at Bath Academy of Art and Saint Martin’s School of Art. She became head of painting at Winchester School of Art in 1978. She stopped teaching in 1981 to paint full time.[5]

Her paintings are large and colorful. She used thick paint and bright colors.[6]

She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1989. She became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1991. She was given the OBE in 1986.[7][8]
