God of War: Ghost of Sparta

God of War: Ghost of Sparta is a 2010 hack and slash video game released on the PlayStation Portable and set between the events of God of War and God of War II.

Gameplay

Kratos can use the Blades of Athena to attack enemies and gain abilities from picked up items and red orbs.

Plot

Flashbacks reveal that an oracle predicted the fall of Olympus would come not from the imprisoned Titans, but from a mortal marked warrior. Zeus and Ares believed the warrior was Deimos, Kratos' brother, because of his unusual birthmarks. Ares kidnapped Deimos during the brothers' childhood training. Kratos tried to stop him but was defeated and left with a scar over his right eye. Athena stopped Ares from killing Kratos, knowing that he had an important destiny. Deimos was taken to the Domain of Death, where Thanatos imprisoned and tortured him. Kratos later marked himself with a red tattoo like his brother's birthmark.

Years later, Kratos has replaced Ares as the God of War. Still troubled by visions of his past, he travels to Atlantis despite Athena's warnings. The sea monster Scylla attacks his ship, but Kratos drives it away and later kills it.

At the Temple of Poseidon, Kratos finds his mother, Callisto. She tries to reveal the identity of his father, but suddenly transforms into a monster. Kratos kills her, and before dying, she asks him to find Deimos in Sparta. Kratos then frees the Titan Thera, causing the Methana Volcano to erupt and destroy Atlantis. During his escape, the gravedigger warns him about the consequences of angering the gods.

Kratos travels to Sparta to search for Deimos. On the way, he fights Erinys, the daughter of Thanatos, and kills her. In Sparta, he sees the Spartans destroying a statue of Ares and preparing to replace it with one of him. He pursues an Ares loyalist into the Spartan Jails and defeats him and the Piraeus Lion. At the Temple of Ares, Kratos encounters the spirit of his younger self and learns that he must return to the sunken Atlantis and find the Domain of Death. A Spartan then gives him his former weapons, the Arms of Sparta.

Kratos returns to Atlantis and enters the Domain of Death, where he frees Deimos. Angry that Kratos did not rescue him sooner, Deimos attacks him. Thanatos then takes Deimos to Suicide Bluffs, but Kratos saves him from falling. The brothers fight Thanatos together. Thanatos realizes that he and Ares had chosen the wrong brother: Kratos was the marked warrior, identified by his red tattoo and the ashes of his dead wife and daughter covering his body.

Thanatos kills Deimos, sending Kratos into a rage. Kratos kills Thanatos and buries Deimos, leaving the Arms of Sparta at his grave. The gravedigger declares that Kratos has become "Death... the Destroyer of Worlds." Athena appears and apologizes for hiding the truth, offering Kratos full godhood. He rejects her and returns to Olympus, vowing revenge against the gods. Athena quietly calls him her brother and asks for his forgiveness.

In the post-credits scene, the gravedigger buries Callisto beside Deimos and notes that only one grave remains. Kratos is then shown sitting on his throne on Mount Olympus.
