In Norse mythology, Gríðr (Old Norse: "greed" or "vehemence, violence, impetuosity") is a female jötunn and a lover of the god Odin. By Odin, she is the mother of Víðarr, god of vengeance. She gifted Thor with a number of magical items, which included his famous pair of gauntlets Járngreipr, which Thor is required to wear in order to wield Mjölnir, along with the staff Gríðarvölr.
