Gwen Shamblin Lara (February 18, 1955 – May 29, 2021) was an American author. She is the founder of the Christian diet program The Weigh Down Workshop and of the Remnant Fellowship Church. In her writings, she combines ideas of weight loss programs with those of Christianity.

Career[change | change source]

Lara began her diet practice in 1980 because she had weight problems in school.[3] She believed that genetics, metabolism and behavior modification alone couldn't explain why some people were thin and others were overweight.[4] In 1986, Lara founded the Weigh Down Workshop,[5][6] a weight loss program.[7]

Her first book was The Weigh Down Diet.[8] It was first published in March 1997 and has sold more than 1.2 million copies.”[9]

Death[change | change source]

On May 29, 2021, Gwen was killed in a plane crash in Smyrna, Tennessee alongside her husband, Joe Lara.[10]
