Hampshire men's cricket team

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hampshire men's cricket team is based in Southampton. It represents the traditional English county of Hampshire. Teams called Hampshire have been active since 1729, and reached a zenith in the second half of the 18th century when they were managed by the famous Hambledon Club until the 1890s. While ad hoc county teams were formed many times in the 19th century, it was not until the foundation of Hampshire County Cricket Club in 1863 that there was a return to organised county activity.

The modern Hampshire team has first-class status, and has competed in the official County Championship since 1895. They have won the trophy twice, in 1961 and 1973.[1] Their main home venue is the Rose Bowl. Many great players have represented Hampshire, including John Small, Richard Nyren, David Harris, Derek Shackleton, Barry Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Malcolm Marshall, and Shane Warne.[2]
