Hedge schools were small unofficial schools in Ireland. They existed during the 18th and 19th century. These were illegal schools. They were designed to give primary education to children of Catholic and Presbyterian faiths. At that time, the laws only allows schools for people of the Anglican faith.[1]

In the Irish language, these schools were called scoil chois claíillegal, scoil ghairid or scoil scairte.[2]
