Henry the Proud (German: Heinrich der Stolze), was born around 1108 as the second son of Henry the Black and Wulfhilde of Saxony, he was Duke of Bavaria from 1126-1138 and Duke of Saxony from 1137 until his death, on 29 May 1127, he married Gertrude, the only daughter of Emperor Lothair III, he received the estates of Supplenburg, Braunschweig and Northeim in Saxony.

After Lothair died, Conrad III was elected King, he demanded the Imperial Regalia which Henry had received from Lothair, Henry asked for his investiture with Saxony in return, but Conrad refused to assent to this, attempts at settlement failed, Henry lost Bavaria in July 1138, Conrad's half-brother Margrave Leopold IV of Austria succeeded him.

In 1139, Henry managed to expel his enemies from Saxony and was preparing to attack Bavaria, but he suddenly died in Quedlinburg, Henry is buried in Königslutter cathedral.
