Hughenden, Queensland

Hughenden is a small town in the state of Queensland, Australia. It's the main town in the Flinders Shire.[1][2] Hughenden is known as the "dinosaur capital of Australia's north" because of the many dinosaur fossils found in the area.

Geography
[change | change source]Hughenden is located in the north-central part of Queensland, about 386 kilometers (240 miles) west of the city of Townsville. It is on the Flinders Highway. The town is situated on the Flinders River.
History
[change | change source]The town was founded in the 1870s and named after a place in England. It became an important center for the grazing of sheep and cattle. Today, cattle ranching is still a major industry.
Tourism
[change | change source]- Flinders Discovery Centre: This center has dinosaur fossils and information about the area's history and geology. There's a full-sized skeleton of a Muttaburrasaurus, a type of dinosaur, at the center.
- Porcupine Gorge National Park: This park is a short drive from Hughenden and is often called "Australia's Little Grand Canyon." It has a deep gorge with unique rock formations and a creek at the bottom.
- Mount Walker: This is a small mountain near the town with great views of the surrounding area.
