Part of the 1977 Atlantic hurricane season

Hurricane Babe was the second named storm in the 1977 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the first to impact the United States during this season. The hurricane formed from a tropical wave on September 3. It became a subtropical cyclone in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm soon became worse as it moved. On September 5, the storm turned north and became a hurricane. Its highest winds were 75 mph (120 km/h). There was a barometric pressure of 995 mbar (hPa; 29.38 inHg). The hurricane then went to Louisiana. The hurricane became weak when it was in land. On September 6, Babe was weak enough to be a tropical depression. On September 9, it stoped when it was over North Carolina.

Hurricane Babe did not have much damage. The hurricane caused the most damage in Louisiana. In Louisiana, the storm caused $10 million (1977 USD; $44.7 million 2025 USD) in damage. This damage was from crop losses. Babe also caused some tornadoes. This caused $3 million (1977 USD; $13.4 million 2025 USD) in damage. There was a lot of rain in North Carolina. This caused 8.99 in (228 mm) and flash flooding. However, there was little damage. There were no deaths from the hurricane. [1]
