iOS 18 is a version of the iOS mobile operating system made by Apple. It was released on September 16, 2024, and announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, 2024.[1][2]

New features

Home Screen

Users can change the color of the Home Screen, resize app icons, and hide app names. Apps can also be placed anywhere on the screen instead of only in rows.[3]

Control Center

Users can add, remove, resize, and organize controls. Third-party apps can also add buttons to the Control Center.[4][5]

Photos

The Photos app was redesigned to make browsing easier. Users can view photos in a grid and explore collections by themes without manually organizing albums.[6]

Messages

Users can send messages with text effects and schedule messages to send later. With Rich Communication Services (RCS) support, non-iMessage users can access features such as read receipts. Messages can also be sent over Wi-Fi and mobile data. Apple also added messaging via satellite for areas without signal.[7][8]

Mail

The Mail app can automatically sort emails into categories such as primary, updates, promotions, and transactions.[9]

Password app

A new Password app lets users manage passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. It replaces the older Keychain system.[10]

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s built-in artificial intelligence system. It works on supported devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 series. It improves Siri, adds smart suggestions, creates AI emojis, and offers advanced text features. Availability has been delayed in some regions.[11]

Supported devices

iOS 18 is the last version that supports iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Apple Intelligence only works on devices using the Apple A17 Pro chip or newer.[12]
