Index fossils are the remains of animals that died long ago, and are used to tell when a certain layer is. Index fossils tend to be fossils of species that were around for a very short amount of time, for example, ammonites. Many ammonite species went extinct quickly after evolving, and this gives a good idea of when other fossil species (think Tyrannosaurus or Triceratops) lived.
