Indulkana (also known as Iwantja) is an Aboriginal community in South Australia. It is on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. It is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the Stuart Highway and 360 km (220 mi) south of Alice Springs.[2] The town was established in 1968.
There were 315 people living at Indulkana in the 2006 census.[1] Most of the people belong to the Yankunytjatjara nation. The 2001 census showed that Indulkana had South Australia's highest proportion residents under the age of 15 (35.0%).[3]
Indulkana has a local community store that also supplies diesel fuel. There is an unsealed airstrip located close to the town. There is also a school, established in 1971. Indulkana does not have a permanent police presence, though it has a police station. State police are based at Marla and run patrols to the area. In the absence of police, the town is served by two constables from the community.[4] The town also has a local artists' co-operative, Iwantja Arts. It has a gallery for sale of art work from across the APY.[5]
