Iowa State Cyclones

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Iowa State Cyclones are a college sports team. They are part of NCAA Division I. They are sanctioned under the National Collegiate Athletic Association (or the NCAA in short). They represent the Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The university is a member of the Big 12 Conference and has twelve sports.

The Cyclones name goes back to 1895. That was the same year when Iowa had a lot of tornadoes (called cyclones at the time). The Chicago Tribune had a headline saying "Struck by a Cyclone–It Comes from Iowa and Devastates the Evanston Town". The nickname stuck from there on out.
