K-19: The Widowmaker is a 2002 independent historical movie about one of the first Soviet nuclear submarines. The film is directed and produced by Kathryn Bigelow. The lead actors are Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. The film had mixed reviews and did not make much money. The film had a budget of $90 million.

Plot 

Captain Alexei Vostrikov commands a ballistic submarine with executive officer Mikhail Polenin. Vostrikov replaces a drunk reactor officer with Radtchenko. The ship tests missiles near the United States. Vostikov has the ship do risky things like crash into the icecaps. One of the rods of the nuclear reactant gets damaged. Men are exposed to radiation and get sick. Vostrikov says no to American help. The fixed pipe leaks and torpedo fuel catches fire. Tension arises between officers and commanders. Radtchenko fixes the problem. Polenin tricks the officers and arrests them. Vostrikov has the submarine dive to avoid overheating. Later in the Soviet Union, Vostrikov is tried for breaking orders. Polenin defends Vostrikov. Twenty-seven men had died from the radiation. Many years later, Vostrikov and Polenin meet again at the cemetery. Vostrikov toasts and honors the dead men.
