Kanishka I, also called Kanishka the Great,[1] was an emperor of the Kushan dynasty. He ruled between c. 127 and 150 CE, and during his reign, the empire was at its strongest.[2] Kanishka is known for his success in war, government, and religion. He was a descendant of Kujula Kadphises, who established the Kushan empire.
Kanishka’s empire included Central Asia, Gandhara, and Pataliputra in the Gangetic plain. His main capital was in Puruṣapura in Gandhara, and another important capital was in Mathura. Coins from his rule have been found as far as in Jabalpur.[3]
