Lauren Ashley Underwood (born October 4, 1986) is an American politician, political advisor and former registered nurse. She is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's 14th district since January 3, 2019.
Early life
[change | change source]Underwood was born on October 4, 1986, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.[1] At age three, she moved with her family to Naperville, Illinois. At eight years old, Underwood was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, a pre-existing condition.[2] Underwood studied at University of Michigan and at Johns Hopkins University.
Political career
[change | change source]In August 2017, Underwood announced her candidacy in the 2018 elections for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois's 14th congressional district.[3] Underwood defeated incumbent Randy Hultgren in the November 2018 general election.[4]
When she was sworn-in at age 32, she became the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.[5] In 2022, she was elected a co-chairs of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, making her the first black woman to have an elected Democratic leadership position since Shirley Chisholm in the 1970s.[6]
