Letterboxd is a website where people can keep track of the movies they have seen. On the website, people can also share their thoughts about movies with others. In April 2026, Letterboxd had 28 million users.[1]
On July 10, 2026, several companies, including Paramount Skydance/RedBird Capital, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Netflix, TPG Inc. and Alexis Ohanian were reportedly discussing the possibility of acquiring the company.[2]
History
[change | change source]Letterboxed was founded in New Zealand in 2011 by Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow.[3][1] The name "Letterboxd" comes from the term letterboxing, which is when black bars are added to the edges of a movie so that the movie will not be stretched when played on a screen of a different format.[4] In 2023, the Canandian company Tiny bought 60% of Letterboxd.[1] Even after the purchase, the founders still decide how to run Letterboxd.[5]
