U Linn Thant (Burmese: လင်းသန့်) is a Burmese politician and diplomat. He works as the representative of the National Unity Government of Myanmar in the Czech Republic.[1][2] He was also part of the 1988 student protests in Myanmar.[3][4]

Early life

U Linn Thant was born in Myanmar in the 1960s. He studied at government and Christian mission schools. Later, he took courses in civil engineering.[5][6]

Political career

In the 1980s, Linn Thant joined the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABSDF).[7] He took part in the 8888 Uprising against the military government in 1988. After the coup, he was arrested and sentenced to death in 1990.[8][9] His sentence was later changed to life imprisonment.[10][11] He spent time in Insein Prison and Thayet Prison before being released in 2008.[12][13]

After his release, he worked with 88 Generation Students and supported education and democracy programs. He later moved to Thailand, where he worked as an English teacher and journalist for the *Irrawaddy* news agency.[14] In 2011, he received political asylum in the Czech Republic.[15][16]

In 2021, Linn Thant was appointed as the National Unity Government’s representative to the Czech Republic. He works to build relations between the NUG and other countries in Europe.[17]

Personal life

Linn Thant lives in the Czech Republic. He has worked to promote Burmese culture and the coffee trade in Europe.[18][19]
