List of national parks of Italy
There are 26 national parks in Italy. National Parks and other protected areas are listed in an document called "Official List of Protected Natural Areas" (EUAP) maintained by the Italian Ministry of the Environment.[1]
The oldest national park is Gran Paradiso National Park, it was established in 1922 to protect the ibex which at that time was almost extint due to hunting.[2] The most recent park is the Matese National Park established in 2025.[3]
Each national park has its own plan (piano del parco) that divides the park's territory into zones with different levels of protection and allows different sorts of human activity. The highest level of protection is the strict nature reserve or wilderness area, in these areas no form of human activity is allowed.
