Lucien Laurent (10 December 1907 – 11 April 2005) was a French footballer and manager. He played as an inside forward for teams in France between 1921 and 1945. At the 1930 FIFA World Cup, he scored the first ever FIFA World Cup goal against Mexico.[1]
Laurent was capped 10 times for France between 1930 and 1935, and played for France at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. He was also part of France's team at the 1928 Summer Olympics[2] and 1934 FIFA World Cup, but did not play any matches at both.
During World War II, he joined the French armed forces. He spent three years as a prisoner of war in Saxony, before being released in 1943.
Laurent was the only player from France's 1930 FIFA World Cup team that was alive when they won the FIFA World Cup in 1998. He died in Besançon on 11 April 2005, at the age of 97.[3] Lucien's brother, Jean Laurent, was also a footballer. They were both part of France's team at the 1930 FIFA World Cup.[3]
