MacKenzie Weegar (born January 7, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames.
Career
[change | change source]Before playing in the NHL, Weegar played two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads of Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He had a successful time with the Tigers. He was named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year and was also named to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and All-Atlantic Hockey Rookie Team.[1]
He was drafted 206th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2013 NHL entry draft. On May 29, 2014, Weegar signed a three-year, $2.4 million entry-level contract to join the Panthers.[2] He was sent down to play for their AHL and ECHL-affiliates San Antonio Rampage and Cincinnati Cyclones.
On April 9, 2017, the Panthers called him up and Weegar made his NHL debut in a 4–1 loss against the Montreal Canadiens.[3] On August 3, 2017, Weegar signed a one-year, $675,000 contract to stay with the Panthers.[4] On October 27, Weegar scored his first NHL goal against Matt Murray in a 4–3 loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins.[5] On July 25, 2018, Weegar signed another one-year contract to stay with the Panthers.[6]
On July 22, 2022, the Panthers traded Weegar along with Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 conditional first-round draft pick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk and a 2025 conditional fourth-round draft pick.[7] On October 7, Weegar signed an eight-year, $50 million contract to stay with the Flames.[8] On October 27, 2024, Weegar recorded his first NHL hat-trick in a 4–3 loss against the New York Islanders.[9]
On March 4, 2026, the Flames traded Weegar to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Jonathan Castagna, Olli Määttä, and three second-round draft picks.[10]
