Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil (24 May 1942 – 7 January 2026) was an Indian ecologist,[1] academic, writer, and columnist. He was the founder of the Centre for Ecological Sciences.[2][3] He was a former member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India and the Head of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) of 2010, which became known as the Gadgil Commission.[4][5]

Gadgil died on January 7, 2026 at a hospital in Pune, India at the age of 83.[6][7]
