Mallory Hagan (born December 23, 1988) is an American beauty queen. She was crowned Miss America 2013.[1] Since 1989, each contestant has to choose an issue she cares deeply about to promote.[2] Hagan chose increasing awareness and prevention of child sexual abuse.[3] Along with the crown she won a $50,000 college scholarship.[3]
Hagen is originally from Opelika, Alabama. She came to New York from Alabama when she was 18 years old.[4] She had been competing in beauty contests since age 13.[4] Hagen entered the Miss New York contest in 2010 and 2011. She won in 2012.[4] The last Miss America from New York was Vanessa Williams in 1984. Hagen is the first Miss America from Brooklyn.[4]
With a concern for education, in her first 24 hours as Miss America, Hagan talked with United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.[5]
