Markowa

Markowa is a rural village in Gmina Markowa, Łańcut County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland. It is located around 10 miles northeast of Rzeszów, and around 31 miles northwest of Przemyśl. The village is particularly known for its efforts of resucing and saving Jews during World War II. Polish Roman Catholic martyrs and Righteous Among the Nations Józef and Wiktoria Ulma were tortured and executed along with their seven children on 24 March 1944 here in Markowa by German SS officers for hiding Jews in their house. Saint Dorothy of Caesarea and the martyrs and blesseds Józef and Wiktoria Ulma are the patron saints of Markowa. The Roman Catholic church of Markowa, under its patron saint Saint Dorothy of Caesarea, is under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Przemyśl. On 4 September 2008, around 4,100 people lived in Markowa.
