Mirpur (Urdu: میر پور) is the largest city in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the capital of Mirpur District and formerly the Mirpur Division. Although it is now part of Kashmir, up until the 1846 treaty of Amritsar Mirpur was part of the Punjab. The population are of Punjabi origin who speak Punjabi. Mirpur is located at the extreme south of what is now known as Azad Kashmir at a elevation of 459 metres (1509 ft), not far from Islamgarh. It is 161 kilometres (100 miles) from Islamabad via the Grand Trunk Road and 295 kilometres (183 miles) from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
