Montgomery is the capital city of the state of Alabama in the United States. In 2000 201,568 people lived there.[2]

Montgomery was started on December 3, 1819 by the merging of New Philadelphia and East Alabama Town.[3] The city became a county seat in 1822. On January 28, 1846, the state capital was moved from Tuscaloosa Montgomery.[4]
