Nicușor Daniel Dan (born 20 December 1969) is a Romanian politician, mathematician and activist who has been the 6th and current president of Romania since 2025. He was the Mayor of Bucharest from 2020 until 2025. During his early years, he won several International Mathematical Olympiads. Dan successfully ran for president in the 2025 presidential election.[1]

Early life

Born in Făgăraș, Brașov County.[2] He won first prizes in the International Mathematical Olympiads in 1987 and 1988 with perfect scores.[3] Dan moved to Bucharest at the age of 18 and began studying mathematics at the University of Bucharest.[4]

In 1992, he moved to France to study mathematics. In 1998 Dan completed a PhD in mathematics at Paris 13 University.[5][6] He returned to Bucharest that year because he wanted to change Romania based on what he learned from French culture.[7]

Political career

In 2015, he founded the Save Bucharest Union and has been an anti-corruption activist. He co-founded the Save Romania Union (USR), but resigned from the party in 2017 over its progressive shift as he was a conservative. Dan was in the Chamber of Deputies from 2016, before being elected Bucharest's first independent mayor in 2020.[8] He won re-election in 2024.

2025 presidential campaign

Dan ran as an independent for the 2025 presidential election and received 21% of the vote in the first round, coming in second. He ran against Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) founder George Simion in the runoff. Dan beat Simion with 53.6% of the vote.[9]

Presidency

Dan was inaugurated as president on 26 May 2025. In his inaugural address, he promised to deal with Romania’s economic problems while saying that "the Romanian state is spending more than it can afford”. He also promised to become a president “open to the voice of society.”[10]

Personal life

Dan is in a long-term partnershipt with Renault executive Mirabela. They have two children.[11][12]
