Onslow, Western Australia

Onslow is a town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is on the coast, about 1,386 kilometers (861 miles) north of Perth. It is close to the Mackerel Islands. It had a population of 829 people as at 2021 and is located within the Shire of Ashburton local government area.[1]

Location

Onslow was named after Alexander Onslow, a chief justice of Western Australia. The first town was built in 1885, but a tropical cyclone destroyed it in 1925. The town was then moved to a new place and was rebuilt.

Work and industry

The main work in Onslow is related to the oil and gas industry. The town is a service center for a large gas project called the Wheatstone Project. Fishing is also a popular activity in the town and on the islands nearby.

About 800 people live in Onslow. The weather is hot and humid in the summer. It gets most of its rain from tropical cyclones. In winter, the weather is warm and pleasant.
