Operation Metro Surge

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Metro Surge was an operation done by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), mostly in the state of Minnesota. It was intended to supposedly arrest or detain undocumented immigrants and/or deport them. The operation started in December 2025 and ended in February 2026. Actions of the operations centered mainly on the Minneapolis and St. Paul.[1] The Homeland Security Department called it the "largest immigration enforcement operation ever carried out."[2]

During the operation, two people (both age 37) were killed: Renée Good and Alex Pretti. They were both citizens of the United States that were shot to death by ICE agents, although almost three weeks apart.[3]

Responses

On January 9, former Governor of South Dakota Kristi Noem and Director of ICE Todd Lyons were answered in a stern manner by the members of the United States Congress. Members of Congress told them that it was not the first time federal agents were used against citizens without any provocation, and that the force was unnecessary.[4]

On January 15 and 16, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey sternly and angrily condemned the actions of ICE in Minnesota and the Twin Cities against everybody, whether or not they had even committed a crime. Governor Walz also called it "retribution." [5]
