Oxazolidinone

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oxazolidinones are a group of organic compounds. They are cyclic compounds with a ring of five atoms: three carbon, one oxygen, and one nitrogen. One of the carbon atoms is part of a carbonyl (it has a double bond to its own oxygen atom).

When the oxygen and nitrogen are next to each other in the ring, they are called isoxazolidinones. Both oxazolidinones and isoxazolidinones are numbered based on how far the carbonyl is from the ring oxygen.

The most important group of oxazolidinones is the 2-oxazolidinones. These are found in many medicines, like antibiotics.
