Oxford University Cricket Club
Appearance
The earliest known mention of cricket at the University of Oxford is dated 1673. It is in a pamphlet written by John Phillips called Duellum Musicum, which is about music tuition.[1] According to Samuel Johnson, who was at Oxford in 1728 and 1729, the sport was popular there, and several matches took place.[2]
As far as is known, the Oxford University Cricket Club was founded before June 1827 when the team played its first match against Cambridge University at Lord's. Starting from then, Oxford held first-class status until 2020.[3]
