Pálháza

Pálháza is a town in Sátoraljaújhely District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 935. It became a town in 2005, making it the smallest and northernmost town in Hungary.[1]

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The settlement was founded in the 1320s. It is first mentioned in a deed of donation from 1389.

In 2022, 91.7% of the population identified as Hungarian, 6.9% as Slovak, 1.8% as Rusyn, 0.3% as German, 0.2% as Romanian, 0.1% as Ukrainian, and 2.4% as other non-local nationalities (7.7% did not respond; due to dual identities, the total may exceed 100%). Regarding religion, 34% were Roman Catholic, 26.3% Reformed, 10.4% Greek Catholic, 0.6% other Christian, 0.2% Lutheran, 0.1% Orthodox, and 2.5% non-religious (25.6% did not answer).
